The Hatchet Lake Dene Nation unveiled a new $1.2 million dollar fire hall Wednesday.
The new fire hall has a number of different funding partners.
The federal government put in $525,000 and Areva Resources Canada and Cameco Corporation each contributed $200,000.
The remaining $365,000 was put in by the Hatchet Lake band.
The new fire hall provides enough space to accommodate the community’s fire truck and all related equipment.
Chief Bart Tsannie says having a new and up to date firefighting facility makes the community safer.
“In the past year, we had lost a number of houses because we didn’t have the proper equipment but since we built this one it’s kind of died down,” he says.
It also contains office space and a training area.
Hatchet Lake is located 724 kilometres northwest of Prince Albert.
