The Share-a-Meal program at the Prince Albert food bank will stop running at the end of this winter.

The food bank says they do not have enough funding to maintain the daily meal program and provide food hampers.

Wes Clark, Co-Manager at the food bank, says an increase in demand for the hampers led to the decision.

“Our food bank numbers have exploded,” he says. “With a very little capacity in general to operate we have had to make some hard decisions.”

The share-a-meal program provides a meal from Monday to Friday, in the afternoon for people in need.

Clark says since the summer they have given out anywhere from 40 to 70 food hampers a day, when 30 used to be a busy day for them.

“We have a little bit of funding for buying some food, but besides that we are strictly reliant on the community to help keep us going.”

“We believe in the share-a-meal and there is a need for it, but we are currently talking to the community to see what can be done to fulfill that need.”

The share-a-meal program will end on Mar. 31.
