A Regina First Nations man claims he was racially profiled and roughed up by police.
In a CBC article, Simon Ash-Moccasin says he was walking near Casino Regina on Wednesday night when two police officers accused him of fitting the description of a criminal who had recently stolen a television.
Ash-Moccasin says he was thrown forcefully into the back of a police cruiser but later released after officers found no warrants for his arrest.
Saskatchewan Coalition Against Racism spokesperson Bob Hughes says he spoke briefly with Ash-Moccasin on Thursday night.
“He was thrown into the police car where he hit his head,” he says. “He had a visible injury on his cheekbone and that was from where he hit the glass in the police car.”
In the CBC article, Ash Moccasin says he is a victim of both racial profiling and excessive police force.
He has officially filed a complaint over the incident.
