The Regina man accused of beating a toddler to death in June 2012 underwent tough questioning during cross-examination at his second-degree murder trial on Thursday.
Thirty-four-year-old Adam Cyr is the final witness in the trial that is now in its third week.
He is charged with second-degree murder in the death of his former girlfriend’s two-year-old daughter Natalia Shingoose.
The mother, Amanda Trevors, was at work while Cyr was looking after the child.
On the witness stand Thursday, Cyr was asked to explain why he told investigators, “My life is gone” after police told him they had no doubt he killed Natalia.
He also said, “I might as well go to correctional now,” and asked police what evidence they had against him.
Cyr told the trial police did not believe his story and he was worried that he would be blamed for the death.
Prosecutors pointed out that he was with Natalia the whole time and if a vicious assault were to occur, he would have heard it.
He agreed with the statement.
Cyr told the trial aside from a bang coming from Natalia’s room that afternoon, he heard no other noises and when he checked on the girl she was fine.
The toddler died as the result of a vicious assault that left her with six broken ribs and a broken collarbone.
She bled to death internally.
At the time, Cyr and Trevors lived together in a small home in north central Regina.
Testimony wrapped up Thursday afternoon and final arguments are expected to begin Friday.
