Unlike last year at this time, the flood forecast for this spring shows no indication of any major problems — but a lot can change in a short time.

Today, Saskatchewan’s Water Security Agency reported that below normal spring runoff is expected in the province’s north, including areas north of La Ronge, Creighton and Cold Lake.

Near normal runoff is predicted for central and southern regions.

Patrick Boyle of the Water Security Agency says most of the province was saturated going into the winter freeze but things changed last month.

“For the most part, we are cautiously optimistic about how things are looking right now. We lost some snow pack in January from that warm weather and that is kind of the main point of how things are looking right now.”

Updated spring runoff forecasts will be provided in March and April. More information and a view of the full forecast can be found online at wsask.ca.
