A group of Metis fishermen from northern Saskatchewan ran afoul of Alberta authorities this past weekend for alleged illegal fishing activities.

The four fishermen have been charged with using a net without a licence to catch fish on Gregoire Lake and then illegally selling fish in front of the Friendship Centre in Fort McMurray.

John Montgrand of Buffalo Narrows says the group was asserting their traditional Metis hunting and fishing rights and they don’t believe they did anything wrong.

“But I’m not really scared. I know there’s a big, stiff fine. Now we have to go to court.”

The four are scheduled to appear in court in Fort McMurray on June 24.

Montgrand says they will fight the charges as long as they have to.
