An 18-month-old girl and a two-year-old boy died in a house fire on a Saskatchewan First Nation early Tuesday morning.

Loon Lake RCMP were called to the Makwa Sahgaiechan First Nation at about 1:30 a.m. to find the house fully engulfed in flames.

A man carrying the two children managed to get out of the house but the children were pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was injured in the fire.

Last month, a fire claimed the lives of a 24 year-old woman and 10-year-old boy on the English River First Nation.

Last year, four children died in fires on Saskatchewan First Nations.

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations has repeatedly called on the federal government to increase funding for better fire protection services and housing.

There are 76 First Nations in Saskatchewan.

Only 17 have their own fire department while more than 30 First Nations have fire protection service contracts with nearby communities.
