A student from the First Nations University in Regina will be heading to Albuquerque, New Mexico next week to be a contestant in the Miss Indian World Pageant.
Amelia Badger is a fourth-year Education student and is one of eight women from Canada who will be part of the annual event.
Badger says she has wanted to be part of the pageant since she was a young girl, and she has been working hard on being prepared.
“To make sure that I am ready physically, mentally, emotionally and also spiritually, I have been talking elders a lot, I have been talking to a lot of traditional knowledge keepers and I have also been asking myself a lot of questions, like how can I be a good role model”.
Badger says being a part of the pageant is something she has dreamed of since she was a child, and she hopes the title goes to Canada this year.
“I am the only girl from Saskatchewan this year so there is 21 other contestants and there is about eight of us from Canada so I am really hoping that whoever is crowned, I hope she comes from Canada”.
Each contestant will compete in the areas of public speaking, personal interview, traditional talent, dance and essay.
