Saskatchewan’s biggest potash company is hoping to increase the number of Aboriginal suppliers in their supply chain.
PotashCorp has set a goal to have 30 percent of their local supply chain in Saskatchewan consist of Aboriginal suppliers by 2020. The company revealed the goal during a Saskatchewan mining supplier forum in Saskatoon on Wednesday.
Leanne Bellegarde is the Director of Aboriginal Strategy for PotashCorp.
She says this goal will allow them to better represent the population in the communities where they operate.
“In Saskatchewan the reality is there is a significant and growing demographic of Aboriginal people and from a long-term operational strategy ensuring Aboriginal people are a part of a viable economy and our operations is really important.”
Bellegarde says PotashCorp wants to ensure they support Aboriginal inclusion in all of their potash mines.
“In fact, we may also see some impact and positive results in our corporate office in Saskatoon, but really our focus is on the roughly quarter of a billion dollars and 1355 suppliers in our Saskatchewan operation.”
The Director of Aboriginal Strategy, says she is encouraged by the positive feedback she has received about this goal, however, she does say the company still has a lot of work to do to meet that goal.
