Students from the Treaty 6 territory spent the morning learning about communities like the Sweetgrass First Nation.
The principal of the Sweetgrass school is pointing to pictures of Chief Sweetgrass and Strike-Him-On-The-Back.
Janet Smith says Chief Sweetgrass’ mother came from Missouri.
She says it was Strike-Him-On-The-Back that signed Treaty 6 at Fort Pitt.
Marcella Dubray did most of the research on the history of Sweetgrass.
She says, at times, she would become angry when she learned of how the federal government would set the band up to fail, especially with farming, by not allowing band members to sell their crops.
Sweetgrass’ story is one of 12 stories that students from the Treaty 6 territory will learn at today’s community history showcase in North Battleford.
The event is being hosted by the Treaty 6 Education Council and its nine member nation schools.
