It has has been 100 years since the first Aboriginal female graduated from the University of Saskatchewan and the school is celebrating that milestone.
Annie Maude McKay was born in Fort a la Corne, Saskatchewan in 1892 and began her education at home.
She entered the U of S on a $200 scholarship and received her BA in 1915.
After receiving her degree, McKay worked at the university library in a number of roles until her retirement in 1959.
The university says McKay paved the way for the more than 360 First Nation and Metis students graduating this year.
In 2007, she was named as one of the university’s 100 Alumni of Influence.
A university spokesperson says she is certain McKay’s legacy will continue to inspire for the next 100 years.
