The University of Saskatchewan is the new home to a half-million-dollar Inuit art collection.
An American art collector donated his entire Inuit and First Nations art collection to the university.
Sam Schwartz says he and his wife started collecting the carvings and sculptures in 1969.
“It was important that I find the right home for it, where the collection would remain intact, would be seen — preferably by young people — with the hope that it would inspire some, give relaxation to others.”
The art collection is on display at the Edwards School of Business on the U of S campus in Saskatoon.
Most of the 87-piece collection was handcrafted no later than the mid-1900s.
University officials says its the largest First Nations sculpture donation in the university’s history.
