Canada’s broadcast regulator has pulled the plug on the Aboriginal Voices Radio network.

The CRTC has run out of patience and confidence with AVR, revoking its broadcast licence, effective July 25.

The ruling mentions five failures of the national broadcaster, including a failure to provide audited financial statements for each of its five radio stations, a failure to provide regular daily newscasts and program logs and a failure to file annual returns and reports.

The CRTC goes on to say Aboriginal Voices Radio did not serve the Aboriginal community well.

It plans to call for applications and hearings to license a suitable broadcaster to serve the “pressing need” of the Aboriginal community, “given that issues vitally important to Aboriginal Canadians are not fully covered or addressed at all in other, non-Native media”.

The AVR network includes stations in Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.
