Six American paddlers are making their way up the Churchill River system as part of an ambition canoe trek that began in the Gulf of Mexico.

The trip got started on January 2 off the coast of Louisiana and will end in mid-September in the Arctic Ocean.

Spokesman John Keaveny says paddling through northern Saskatchewan has been the best part of the trip so far.

“I would say the last few weeks on the Sturgeon Weir and the Churchill River have been the highlights for me,” he says. “Just to really see that crisp, clean water you think about, the scenery, the lakes — and to get more of a remote feel that we haven’t had so far.”

When the nine-month trip is over, the six friends from Minnesota and Iowa will have canoed over 8,300 km through 10 states and five provinces.

This is the 176th day of their expedition.

They call themselves Team Rediscover North America and you can track their progress at rediscoverna.com.
