A park in Saskatoon has been named after the current Chief of Whitecap Dakota First Nation.
The city along with the Saskatoon Public Schools bestowed the honour to Chief Darcy Bear on Wednesday.
Chief Darcy Bear Park is located adjacent to Nutana Collegiate where the chief attended high school in the 80s.
During an unveiling ceremony this morning several dignitaries thanked Chief Bear for the hard work he has done for the Whitecap Dakota, the city and the province.
Mayor Don Atchison says the park naming is a small gesture for a great man.
Chief Bear says he was humbled by the acknowledgement and accepted the honour on behalf of his community.
“As leaders when we achieve results we can’t do it alone,” said Chief Bear. “We need support, we need partners and we also need the support of our people and our staff.”
Chief Bear also spoke on the spirit of alliance that has grown between Whitecap Dakota First Nation and the City of Saskatoon over the past 200 years.
He says Wednesday’s event was another step along the way.
