Firefighting crews are back on the line as the Egg fire crept closer to La Ronge overnight.

The fire east of the airport has moved a bit further south towards Eagle Point but has not reached the homes there, and firefighters and helicopters are dousing the line.

Meanwhile, the arm of the fire northwest of town grew, but is still outside the bulldozer line established between Bigstone Lake and Five Mile Hill, approximately 4 km from the community.

Wildfire Management is assessing conditions to see if a backburn is possible in that region to remove fuel for that fire.

All non-essential people are being evacuated southward from La Ronge, Air Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band.

Most have left already, but the few who still need assistance can report to the Jonas Roberts Centre to await transportation.

Highways officials report smooth operations for last night’s organized escort of approximately 120 vehicles south from from Stanley Mission, Grandmother’s Bay, Missinipe, and Sucker River, who have been affected by other fires.

However, Highway 102 north of La Ronge is still closed to general traffic.

Highway 2 from Prince Albert to La Ronge will be open for most of the distance, but no one except emergency personnel will have access to, or through, the three communities.

Drivers are required to obey all emergency personnel, check stops and barricades.

The resort areas of Napatak and Potato Lake to the south are not immediately threatened, but evacuation is still prudent.

Highway 165 west will be open to Besnard, but there is no access between that point and Beauval.

An emergency clinic is now operating out of the ambulance centre in Air Ronge and emergency services are still available through 911.
