The Whitecap Dakota First Nation has filed a lawsuit against the band’s bank and financial auditor.
Chief Darcy Bear alleges the Royal Bank of Canada and KPMG could have prevented a multi-million-dollar fraud.
Last month, the chief promised he would do whatever it takes to get the band’s $5.8 million back.
“Well, you know me,” said Bear. “I never quit. I don’t give up. We’ll continue to work on the civil side, as well.”
It’s alleged former band employee Hugo Gallegos cashed more than 1,700 cheques with RBC.
The band, in its statement of claim, says the auditing firm KPMG should have caught this during their audits.
Meanwhile, Gallegos is expected to enter a plea and be sentenced tomorrow for the alleged fraud.
