An inmate has died after staff found him unresponsive at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary, located just outside Prince Albert.

Staff performed CPR on Arthur William Michel when they went to his cell in the minimum security unit on Wednesday night, a release from Correctional Services Canada (CSC) says. He was later pronounced dead at Victoria Hospital around 7:30 p.m.

The 53-year-old man had been less than a year into a two-year, six-month sentence for sexual assault and a failure to comply with an undertaking.

CSC is not revealing the nature or cause of Michel’s death – it says the circumstances will be reviewed, and that the police and medical examiner have been notified.

His family has been notified.
