The Shoal Lake Cree Nation has had enough of some band members drinking away their welfare cheques.
Earlier this week the band sent out a letter to members informing them about a new social assistance policy.
The memo warns band members that if they are found walking around intoxicated causing a disturbance they will no longer get a welfare cheque. It specifically speaks to those who are 18 to 25 years old.
Instead the band member will get a food voucher and in some cases the voucher will be made out to the individual’s parent or guardian.
The band also encourages other members to report welfare recipients who are walking around drunk.
The Chief and Council could not be reached for comment.
