The importance of treaties and what they really mean for First Nations people is being discussed at a three-day gathering at the First Nations University in Regina.

The treaty gathering begins Friday night with a youth forum. Discussions  on Saturday will focus on land and water rights,  as well as the truth and reconciliation report.

Organizer Joely Big Eagle-Kequahtooway says it is important that First Nations are united in their goals.

“So you know it’s where we can all come together and create this alliance so we can have one voice,” she says.

Big Eagle-Kequahtooway says younger people are much more aware and involved in pushing for change.

She says understanding the treaties is important for both old and young.

“I think the biggest thing is finding out what everyone is doing so we can help each other so we can achieve some milestones,” she says.

Up to 500 people are expected to attend the event sometime over the next three days.
