The chief of the Onion Lake Cree Nation is facing a number of charges including two counts of assault, possession of a knife for a dangerous purpose and threatening to damage property.
Fifty-four-year-old Wallace Fox was arrested yesterday in connection with the incident that took place at a private residence on the reserve on May 18.
RCMP confirm Fox is accused of assaulting a woman.
Fox is attending a funeral today, and is unavailable for comment. He will be back in court December 16 to face the charges.
RCMP investigated the complaints then turned the file over to prosecutors in North Battleford for a determination on charges.
Just yesterday, Fox was celebrating a court victory over the First Nations Financial Transparency Act. A federal court judge ruled Friday that First Nations were not adequately consulted and the court blocked the federal government from taking further legal action against bands which have refused to comply with the law.
Fox is now calling on Ottawa to restore all funding.
