An investigation is underway after a police-involved shooting at the Red Earth First Nation.

The incident happened shortly before 10:00 pm Saturday when Carrot River RCMP were called to an assault at a home on the reserve.

Police say when officers arrived, a man outside the home fired a shot at them with a long barreled weapon.

An RCMP member fired back and the man took off on foot.

A 24-year-old man from the Red Earth First Nation was later found with what are believed to be gunshot wounds.

His name has not been released, but he was taken to hospital in Saskatoon for treatment.

The RCMP has requested the Saskatoon Police Service conduct an independent external investigation into the incident.

The RCMP has also asked the Ministry of Justice to appoint an independent observer.
