Time is running out, but Liberal candidate Lawrence Joseph does not seem to be worried as he waits for word from his campaign team on whether they will apply for a judicial recount.
Joseph lost by just 70 votes to the NDP’s Georgina Jolibois in the Northern Saskatchewan riding of Desnethe-Missinippi Churchill River. It was the closest election race in Saskatchewan, and the second-closest race in all of Canada.
Joseph says he has been getting lots of calls from constituents, but says he “is just sitting back, letting people do their work and whatever happens, happens.”
Elections Canada has already granted one recount in the province. The riding of Regina-Lewvan was won by the NDP’s Erin Weir, by 132 votes. The Conservative candidate Trent Fraser has been granted the recount.
Recounts can be requested within four days of the election results being validated. That means candidates will have to apply this week.
Automatic recounts are held in ridings where the margin of victory is less than one thousandth of a percent.
