The Onion Lake hockey community is up in arms over what’s being described as a racist goal celebration.
A member of the Lloydminster Bandits Junior B team allegedly taunted the hometown Border Chiefs’ bench with a bow-and-arrow gesture in Wednesday night’s game.
Community spokesman Grant Whitstone can’t believe a Caucasian player would do this while playing with Aboriginal teammates.
“The ironic thing is, there’s five aboriginal players in the Lloydminster lineup, and you still go do that in a First Nations reserve, playing with First Nations people, unreal,” said Whitstone.
The Lloydminster Bandits say, “The celebration that took place is something the player has done since he was young, it’s not a celebration specific to that game or location.”
Meantime, North Eastern Alberta Junior B League President Ted Graling didn’t say a lot when he was asked to comment on the incident.
“You know I don’t have a whole bunch of background on the thing, so I’m not going to do a bunch of comments on something I’m not really familiar with,” said Graling.
