On Monday, the CBC temporarily suspended the comment section on its website for Indigenous stories, stating there were too many comments that were hateful and vitriolic.

Brodie Fenlon, the CBC’s acting director of digital news, says problematic comments existed since people began to open comment threads.

“As I said, we are aware there are problems, well the thing is we actually have guidelines,” says Fenlon. “There good guidelines and they work, when they’re enforced.”

Fenlon says the guidelines were not being enforced the way they want them to be and will find out if they can make things better.

He says the CBC is making a concerted effort to connect with Indigenous communities.

The CBC says changes will be made and hopes to open the comments section as soon as possible.
