Saskatoon’s largest career fair focusing on First Nation students wrapped up at Prairieland park on Monday afternoon.
The 2016 Future Is Yours Career Expo was put on in conjunction with the Saskatoon Tribal Council and PotashCorp.
STC Chief Felix Thomas says the expo is a way to develop relationships between First Nations high school students and potential employers.
“Right now a lot of them don’t have any relationships with outside employers,” says Chief Thomas. “In order to build a network…you need that initial spark.”
In addition to the trade show, the expo also featured presentations from several successful young First Nations entrepreneurs.
“These kids don’t want to hear a 57-year-old tribal chief speak,” joked Chief Thomas. “But they can relate to a lot of these youth and hopefully that inspires them to say ‘if they can do it I can do it as well’.”
The career expo also had a presence from northern Saskatchewan in attendance.
The Tribal Chief says he was glad to see students from northern schools like Ile a la Crosse, Buffalo Narrows and Patuanak in attendance.
“This is truly a provincial-wide career fair and a lot of the kids come from five or six hours away and we certainly want to do what we need to do to keep it up.”
