The Assembly of First Nations is convening a National First Nations Education Forum taking place in Ottawa on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The forum will aim to raise awareness on work being done to achieve First Nations control of First Nations education.
Speakers at the forum include AFN National Chief Perry Bellegarde, Indigenous Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett and President of the First Nation University Dr. Mark S. Dockstator.
The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) says they are looking forward to the dialogue that will take place at the forum.
FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron says he hopes the forum will impact future generations of First Nations.
“From coast to coast to coast our First Nation students on reserve are funded much less than our provincial counterparts,” says Chief Cameron. “I hope a forum like this will help move forward our inherent, Treaty and Indigenous people’s right to education.”
He also says it has been over ten years since a forum like this was last held.
Some items of discussion during the forum include control of First Nation education, culture and language as a foundation for learning and community engagement.
