At Saskatoon’s City Council meeting this week, the mayor gave a nod to the Whitecap Dakota First Nation for its role in erecting a monument that’s gotten some special recognition.
Years ago, Whitecap Dakota initiated the process of building a monument to commemorate the alliance between the British Crown, the Dakota and others.
The bronze structure depicts a gift exchange between a British Colonel and Dakota Chief Wabasha while the colonel’s aboriginal wife and daughter look on.
The donation from the First Nation led to a special unveiling in 2014 by Prince Edward.
This week, mayor Don Atchison handed out Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee awards, recognizing the recognized the “Spirit of Alliance – War of 1812” monument in the education category.
