A documentary sharing the stories of those living in poverty in Saskatoon has officially been released to the public.
“A Chance to Speak” originally premiered in September in Saskatoon and Regina and features the stories of people living on Saskatoon’s streets.
The film explores issues around how people are affected by homelessness, gang violence, and the sexual exploitation of children.
Director and Producer Vern Boldick says the goal of the documentary is to put a face to poverty.
“These are our friends, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters and we need to respect them and see that anybody can become homeless,” says Boldick. “We also talk about the sexual exploitation of children, nobody chooses that… that is something that his been forced upon a child.”
Boldick says he is currently in talks with the Ministry of Education about the possibility of the documentary being screened in schools throughout the province.
The documentary is available for purchase or rental at achancetospeak.com
For the month of March, $2 of every purchase or rental will be donated to the Student Wellness Initiative Toward Community Health which is a Saskatoon organization providing health services to the inner city.
