A forestry company working in northern Saskatchewan says they will engage with northern communities who have any concerns with their forestry operations.
Carrier Forest Products will be holding 2 public meetings in Beauval on Wednesday to present their draft operating plans in the northwest area for the next 5 years.
Company Manager David Knight says the meetings are their way of being open to the public for feedback.
“We are seeking information and we are respectful of people’s wishes expectations and desires,” says Knight.
The two meetings will take place at the Beauval Community Hall.
The areas proposed for timber harvesting are along Highway 165 and Carrier says maps will be made available at the meeting. Those maps can also be viewed at nwfma.ca.
Recently the community of Pinehouse claimed some land to be cleared by Carrier Forest Products was used for traditional practices.
The northern Metis community recently met with the Ministry of Environment to address these concerns.
While Knight says Carrier Forest Products was not privy to what was discussed in that meeting he says the forestry company has had their own meetings with Pinehouse leaders and he has described those meetings as positive.
“If you look at the plans we have submitted they all reflect the concerns we have heard from community members.”
“Our hope is through processes like these meetings we will come to an understanding with the communities and convince them that what we are proposing to do is green and sustainable and employment generating.”
