Catholic students in Saskatoon will be showcasing what they learned about racism in an art showcase on Wednesday evening.
Throughout the past semester students from five different schools in the city have been learning about different areas of anti-oppressive education.
On Wednesday the students will showcase what they learned through the third annual ‘Voices for Change’ event.
Throughout the event students St. Edwards Ecojustice Program, St. Mary Wellness and Education Centre, George Vanier Catholic Fine Arts School, St. Margeurite School and Bishop James Mahoney High School will be using drama, spoken word, visual art and dance to spread a message of compassion and equality for all.
Michelle Vanhouwe, with the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Anti-Oppressive Education Committee, says many of the students have approached the issues from different angles.
“Some students focused on Residential Schools, some students have focused on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Woman while others have looked at racism across the world, so it is definitely a showcase of what they learned throughout the semester,” says Vanhouwe.
She says the students will have an important message to share.
“They are the leaders of the future, so we are really hopeful these students will be able to showcase what they learned and work toward a more equitable future.”
Wednesday’s performance will take place at 7 p.m. at George Vanier School in Saskatoon.
