The provincial coroner has ruled that 29 year old Nadine Machiskinic accidentally fell to her death down a hotel laundry chute, with drugs being a significant contributing factor.
The aboriginal woman died on January 10th of 2015, but it took 17 months for the coroner to complete his report.
In it, coroner, Kent Smith rules the cause of death was blunt force trauma caused by the 10 storey fall, with drug toxicity being a significant contributing factor.
In addition to alcohol, there were elevated levels of a number of drugs in her system including methadone, anti-depressants, and sleeping pills. There were also trace amounts of anti-anxiety medication and cocaine.
The report also found she gained access to a the laundry chute area on the tenth floor because an automatic locking door was not working properly.
The coroner is recommending better video surveillance and routine checks to make sure all secure areas are properly locked to the public.
He also concludes the police investigation into the death was thorough and there is no evidence to suggest that foul play, or suicidal intent were factors in the death.
The family of Nadine Machiskinic has filed a lawsuit against the hotel claiming negligence. In its statement of defense, the hotel, says Machiskinic was the author of her own misfortune.
