4 years ago doctors told Michelle Martin she may never walk again because of her Multiple Sclerosis.
This week she walked across the stage at the University of Saskatchewan Spring Convocation to accept her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology.
Michelle, a 48 year-old mother of two and a woman of Metis heritage, always said she would go back to school when her kids grew up.
She says it meant a lot to be able to walk across the stage to accept her degree.
“I was probably the proudest student across that stage, especially to be able to wear heels…just to be able to move across the stage with no-one helping me was a phenomenal feeling,” said Michelle.
Michelle spoke on the many challenges she faced along the way as a mature student with MS.
She says while the challenges were hard, her faith in the creator and her desire to finish something she started drove her through.
“I really believe that if you start something in life you finish it, so when I had to quit the first time I knew that wasn’t who I was, but I did it… I completed it.”
Her advise to anyone facing challenges when getting higher education is to never give up.
“I strongly believe for every negative we have there is a positive and we need to draw the positives out of the obstacles we face.”
Michelle says her plans are now to return to the University of Saskatchewan for an honours degree.
The 48 year-old mother of two has plans to one day pursue a PhD in sociology.
