A Saskatchewan First Nations rapper is offering his newest album for free.

This week, Joey Stylez released his 16 singles from the album Grey Magic on Soundcloud.

In a post on Facebook, the Moosomin First Nation man says it’s for “those who simply can’t afford” it. That idea is in keeping with the song Conquer X Divide.

Stylez explained, the song encourages people to take over something “and then divide it amongst the people instead of splitting the people up and taking over the people. I have a different approach than the oppressor.”

He said he’s changed a lot since his first album came out in 2009, when the single “Sugar Cane” blew up.

“Back then, my only concern was trying to make world hits, you know what I mean, which is awesome. But now I feel like I have an offering to give to the world and a duty to represent for Native America. You know, like no one has given us a fair shine,” he said.

Another difference between Stylez’ past music and the new album, is that now he’s combining his roots as an artist with his culture.

“This (album), I feel like it recognizes my Native American spirituality as well as my street background,” he said.

Stylez has evolved in more ways than just musically. He’s branched off into painting and wants to empower Aboriginal people.

“Let’s go against the system before the system rolls overtop of us,” he said. “It doesn’t necessarily mean a violent, hostile one, there’s also a peaceful, educated way.”

For example, he’d like to see his wealth go towards creating First Nations-focused legal practices, holistic healing, and making land purchases.

Stylez said he knows “for a fact” he stacks up against the best rappers today, but doesn’t get the same radio play because of his unique values.

“I don’t fit their program because of where I come from, my story, the type of person I am, the vocabulary I use, my ideas of how I think things should be, it’s a threat,” he said.

These days, his focus is on providing for his baby Matisse and partner, Aboriginal singer Carson Grey.

Both Grey and Stylez are strong players on the National Aboriginal Music Countdown.
