Last night Red Earth decided to evacuate 200 health priority individuals as water levels rise in the area.

The evacuees were transported to Saskatoon because of concerns about the water levels cutting off emergency access to the community.

Red Earth Chief Ian McKay says they are now waiting on water levels to drop, however he says the levels are actually rising.

“As of Friday morning we are still monitoring the situation,” he said. “We have our crews out there sandbagging as best we can to buy us some time as we are trying to implement our next emergency measures.”

Chief McKay says Red Earth is actually divided geographically into two different communities and it was the northern part of the community that was evacuated.

He says over 1000 people still remain there and they will be keeping an eye on the situation in case any further evacuations are needed.

“It is out of our hands and we can only ask our creator to help us and support us to keep our people as safe as possible.”

McKay also says his thoughts and prayers are with all of the other communities across the province.

“I hope they can endure it the best they can and I wanted to thank every volunteer and organization who has helped out.”
