Busses are being loaded in Saskatoon as residents of the Red Earth First Nation begin the 350 kilometer journey back home.
They were forced to evacuate on Friday when it looked like the Carrot River would overflow its banks as it reached its peak flows after last week’s rain.
The peak came and went without incident.
There is still a water main break in the community, but this will not affect the return of residents. Government offers to help repair the pipe have been declined.
There was also some flooding in Swift Current on the weekend, but damage was minimal and the flood water have receded.
The worst hit is Estevan where hundreds of basements were flooded during flash floods a week ago. There were also flooded basements in Carrot River and Arborfield.
For the most part there will be no insurance, but the provincial disaster assistance program does provide some relief for uninsurable losses.
