An event in Spiritwood is aiming to build the community back up, 10 years after two mounties were killed by gunman Curtis Dagenais.
Constable Robin Cameron and Marc Bourdages were shot during a pursuit in the area on July 7, 2006 and Dagenais is in prison for those crimes.
Money raised from a five-kilometre run/walk on Tuesday will go towards bronze memorial statues of Constable Robin Cameron and Marc Bourdages.
More than 30 people participated in the event, which took place on a sunny morning in Spiritwood and wrapped up with a barbecue at noon.
The Agency Chiefs Tribal Council’s member First Nations were among the communities and agencies represented at the walk.
Chief Steven Jim said the statues are meant to remember Cameron and Bourdages.
“What it’s going to mean is that we never forget the tragic event that occured her 10 years ago and that we honour the two fallen RCMP who gave up the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
The statues are part of a larger memorial park being built in Spiritwood by the Cameron and Bourdages Memorial Society.
More memorial events will take place in the community on Wednesday, including a round dance.
