More than $700 have been raised to help an Aboriginal family who’s taken in their grandchildren after two sudden deaths in Delisle.

The 26-year-old man and woman had lived there for two years or so before they were found dead in their home.

The woman who died has family ties to Patuanak and her partner was from out east, according to Delisle resident Amanda Czank who attended a mom’s play group with the woman who died.

The RCMP is remaining silent on the nature of the deaths and Czank said even though locally there are a lot of questions still to be answered, the main concern is the couple’s preschool-aged children.

“Everyone was sad for the kids more than anything, with the two young kids being left behind,” Czank said.

Czank wants people to know that even though the couple only lived in Delisle for a few years and the kids’ mother was shy, they had made connections and were active in the community.

Now, Czank has started a Go Fund Me and has joined to help out in any way they can.

“It’s just there if anybody wants to, because I know a lot of people have come forward and said ‘how can I help?’ And some people have the money to give and if others don’t, I know a lot of people have volunteered themselves to help maintain their yard for the rest of the summer so I’ve got a group of people, we’re going to be taking care of their garden and the grass for them,” she said.

Czank admits she was unsure how the children’s grandparents, who live in Saskatoon, would react to the idea. The grandmother was appreciative and they share a few memories with each other.

“She expressed some interest in putting some money in at trust fund for the kids,” Czank said.

While the kids are doing well with their grandparents right now, Czank points out the children are young, and it’s difficult to fully understand what’s happened.

MBC will not be sharing the name of the couple who died at this time.
