A small protest of clear-cutting operations in the Leoville area near Spiritwood has received a bit of good news.

Idle No More co-founder, Sylvia McAdam Saysewahum organized the protest because it is near her family’s traditional hunting ground.

She has been providing daily updates on her Facebook account. In her latest posting, she says the forestry operation will not affect her family’s hunting shelter.

“They say they are not going to clear-cut near the hunting lands,” she said. “They are still on my family’s hunting lands, but where our shelter is — they are not going to clear-cut there.”

Meanwhile, Dave Cobb, an environment department official, said the logging operations in the area were approved with the support and after consultation with local First Nation and Metis groups.

“We have done our duty to consult with respective First Nations and Metis in the area,” he said.  “We do our duty to consult anytime there is going to be any proposed forest management activities.”

Leoville is about 140 kilometers north-west of Prince Albert.
