The Western Major Baseball League’s Swift Current Indians will have a new name next season.

In a news release, longtime Swift Current Indians team member, Harv Martinez talked about why there’s going to be a name change.

“The tradition and passion for baseball in this region will still be strong and vibrant. The new direction in creating a new nickname allows for us re-brand our product and promote the team in a more current and sensitive manner,” he said.

The board of directors for the Swift Current Indians has been thinking about changing the name since 2015.

“The organization has put considerable thought into the decision and we believe it’s the right thing to do at this time. We are excited for the possibilities, which lie ahead,” said Martinez in a news release.

It’s expected a new name will be picked in November.
