Northern Wild Fishery held the grand opening of its Prince Albert retail location this week, making northern fish available to the public.

The business is owned and operated by Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nation.

The fishery offers lake trout, pickerel, pike, jackfish and whitefish from northern lakes, which is wild caught and blast frozen at a facility in Wollaston Lake.

The company uses sustainable fishing practices, inspired by traditional knowledge to minimize environmental impact. The company also provides employment opportunities and economic development for people in Hatchet Lake.

Operations Manager, Ed Benoanie, says they hope to establish customers in the south.

“The fish is as fresh as you can get it — a very clean lake up north and not just Wollaston Lake, but surrounding areas,” he said.

Benoanie says he believes the idea of quality, natural food from northern lakes will appeal to people from Prince Albert and Saskatoon.

The Northern Wild Fishery retail store in Prince Albert is located on River Street and has been open since the beginning of November.
