During the second world war, the Moose Woods Reserve sent seven of around 70 eligible people to serve during the war.
Moose Woods would later become Whitecap Dakota First Nation.
On Wednesday, students at Whitecap’s Charles Red Hawk Elementary School took the opportunity to honour these and other veterans from their community.
The gym was filled with students and community members for, bag pipes, an honour song and a reading of Flanders Field.
The students also took time to honour Veteran Elder Willis Royal who served in the Korean War, spent several decades in the Canadian Army, and was given a Special Service Medal for his work with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Royal also founded the Veterans Memorial Service at Whitecap.
For Whitecap Chief Darcy Bear, the service is about sharing these important stories with the next generation.
“I think it is very important for our young people to understand the sacrifices that were given, so we can enjoy the freedoms we have today in this multicultural nation we call Canada,” says Chief Bear.
This was the eleventh annual Veterans Memorial Service at the school.
