There will be some added urgency and concern for northern mayors when they meet next week at the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association convention in Saskatoon.

New North Chair Bruce Fiddler says the north has been hit by two waves of job cuts by Cameco and there are now concerns secondary industries will feel the effects and cut jobs as well.

In addition, Fiddler is worried about the impact of the province’s cost-cutting campaign.

“I hope through discussions with the various ministries in the provincial government we can avoid that situation or alleviate them.”

The SUMA convention begins Sunday. Northern mayors will hold a strategy session Tuesday morning.
