Two weeks have been set aside for an inquest into the death of an Aboriginal woman in the Saskatoon Regional Psychiatric Centre more than four years ago.
35-year-old Kinew James died of an apparent heart attack. She had a number of medical problems, including diabetes, infections, obesity and heart problems.
A preliminary investigation into the death done by Corrections Canada indicates there was a delay in getting her help on the night she died on January 20th, 2013. The scope of the inquest has also been expanded, taking a broader look at James’ life, half of which was spent in custody.
The Elizabeth Fry Society has been granted standing at the inquest and has requested more than 8,000 pages of documents relating to James’ decades of institutional care be entered as evidence.
The inquest begins May 8th in Saskatoon.
