The chief of the Cumberland House Cree Nation in northeast Saskatchewan has suddenly and unexpectedly resigned, effective today.
In a heartfelt notice to band members, Chief Lorne Stewart, wrote: “The decision is a personal matter, which I can no longer keep bottled inside,” he said. “Before I do more harm to myself and my family, I feel this is the right time to resign. It is now up to me to begin my healing journey.”
The notice was sent out on Friday, and it takes effect today. Chief Stewart was elected to a three-year term in 2015.
No other details were revealed in the letter of resignation.
