Five students have been named as finalists in for the Northlands College Northern Visionaries contest.

Christie Bartle, Shannon Bear, Ashley Carlson, Leah Nagy and Tina Shaw were picked out of 60 video essays submitted from students all over the north.

The students were asked to compile a short video of what their hopes and dreams for their communities are and how they would make a difference to the place they live.

Brandi Belle is the chairperson of the Northern Visionaries Gala event, which is entering into its fourth year. She said the submissions coming in from all across the north is one sign of the event’s growing popularity.

“We had entrants from Deschambault, Southend, Creighton, Wollaston and Black Lake talking about how they want to get a post-secondary education and take that education and make a difference at home,” she said.

Belle said the topics students touched on were diverse as well. One student did a video essay on food sustainability in Northern Saskatchewan, while another touched on domestic violence.

The overall winner will be announced at the Gala event on Saturday at Eagle Point Resort in La Ronge.
