Mounties say a firework – not gunfire – is responsible for a loud noise heard near La Ronge’s Bell’s Point school before lunch on Tuesday.
The school was put into hold and secure mode for 25 minutes after 11:50 a.m. while officers investigated a report of a gunshot-like sound in the area of the school and found a firework was set off, not on the school grounds but nearby.
However, Senator Myles Venne was in lockdown around 9 a.m. as well and officers have no update on the cause of that. A group that was meant to tour MBC’s studio was delayed by about 45 minutes due to the lockdown. The two schools are about 1.2 kilometres apart.
MBC has contacted the RCMP for further details, and will provide an update when it becomes available.
A Tuesday afternoon post from Northern Lights School Division #113 on Facebook states:
“We have been informed that there was an incident that occurred today within La Ronge’s Tri-Community. We understand that the RCMP were involved and everything is under control. At no time were any of our schools involved nor was their safety compromised. The safety of students and staff will always remain our priority.”
