The City of Regina has become the second municipality in the province to sign an agreement with the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations to try to end racism through education and example.

The community of Elbow was the first to sign a similar memorandum of understanding in April.

“As treaty partners, it is incumbent on us to understand each other’s history,” said Regina Mayor Michael Fougere.

The agreement commits the city to provide educational initiatives for all staff and elected officials on the subjects of the history of treaty, residential schools, colonialism and the inherent rights of First Nations people.

“Education and awareness are essential to addressing the issue of racism in our communities,” said FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron.
