A preliminary hearing is set for a late 2016 theft turned murder investigation on Big Island Lake Cree Nation.

Anthony Mitsuing’s hearing for first-degree murder of Jordan Sandfly, 28, is scheduled to take place in October at Meadow Lake Provincial Court.

Sandfly’s body was found on Dec. 20, 2016 while RCMP officers were looking into an early morning theft. While his death was immediately treated as suspicious, his identity was not initially known. Residents described the scene during that investigation as a “lock down.”

After days of police interview witnesses witness interviews and the coroner performing an autopsy on Sandfly, Mitsuing was identified as the suspect and arrested. Investigators said the men were known to each other and officers were not looking for any other suspects.

Mitsuing, of Makwa Sahgaiehcan, has been in custody for more than eight months and has not requested a bail hearing during that time.

A preliminary hearing is designed for a judge to determine whether there is enough evidence to go to trial. If the case goes to trial, Mitsuing has chosen to be tried by judge and jury.
