Another band councillor from the Key First Nation, about 100 kilometres north of Yorkton, has been sentenced.
The case came up yesterday and was quickly dealt with after years of delays. 52-year-old Clinton Key was sentenced to 13 months in jail and prohibited from driving for 3.5 years after being found guilty of impaired driving.
The charges go back to March of 2014 and were finally dealt with in Yorkton Provincial Court yesterday. Key has a long history of driving offences. He was elected as a band councillor in October of 2016, but did not disclose the charges he was facing.
In April of this year, another band councillor, 64-year-old Clarence Papequash was sentenced to a year in jail for drug trafficking.
Even though two of the five band councilors are now behind bars, no decision has been made on whether to call by-elections. There are still enough councillors for a quorum.
Ironically, Key and Papequash are also in a legal battle to try to overturn the election of the chief in the 2016 band election. The case has been in and out of federal court since last October in what is called case management hearings.
